Provision The Anything World Interview By: Matt Willis November 2004
|
Matt: Ok, ill start this interview by saying that I am a huge fan and supporter of your music.
I am extremely honored to have you for a innterview.....
Breye: Thanks Matt!
Q: there have been a few personnel changes over the past two years or so. If you would, explain
the roles of new-comers Varien and Charles. How do they enhance the overall vision and
direction of the band?
A:---Well not to mislead anyone, there have actually only been 2 changes from 2003 to 2004.
Live members Alex Virlios and Carlos Covarrubias both left Provision to focus on other music
projects and college. And we have hired 2 new live members for our upcoming North American
Tour.
Jen takes up the String and Pad Synth parts that Alex Virlios was playing, just as Live member
Matt Coker did in the beginning. Charles performs secondary leads and Electronic Percussion;
adding a new Live element that has never been present in Provision before. I wouldn't say it
changes the Vision or Direction of the band with our 2 newest members, but we shall see what
time holds in store for our 3rd album???
Q: After the departure of Alex Virlios, you stepped in as the permanent front man. Is that a role
you are comfortable with? It is obvious that you can definitely fulfill this role with your voice and
charisma. Is this a role you relish and how have you adapted to your semi-new role?
A:---Well to dispell any myths, I have always kinda been the frontman of Provision. Alex Virlios
and I routinely traded places on stage sharing Vocal and String and Pad Synth part duties, but
I've always in many ways held the lead vocal role in Provision. I don't consider it a new role as
it's what I've always done in some way, so there's been no adaptation.
Q: Explain the new album "Visualize". How does it differ from the band's previous album
"Evaporate".
A:---I wouldn't say it differs so much as I'd say that it Expands on our Signature Sound by
combining EBM and classic Industrial Dance Elements to the Progressive Dance and Synthpop
Hybrid we created on Evaporate.
It pushes the boundaries of longing and emotion even further than we ever have before, and
shows our growth as musicians and artists. Fans will definitely have to get their hands on the
new album for a personal test drive!!!!!!!!
Q: You guys have shot a few videos recently. One video in particular, Tell us about its unique
location (Battleship-Texas). How was the experience? Explain the importance to have more of a
multi-media approach to the band's music?
A:---Well, yes we have actually shot 6 videos recently for "Visualize".
(Half the album that is) The video for "Intruder" was shot on the Battleship Texas in San Jacinto,
and most of the footage was shot 3 floors below the deck in the engine room.
It moves pretty fast and really shows the energy of the song throughout. I think fans will be very
moved by what we accomplished with it.
Music Video is very Important to us, as we're a very Visual band. Everything from our Live Shows
to our Music is built around the energy, pain, love, and emotions we experience in life. We hope
to convey those things through video as an added experience to what we've created with
Provision......
Q: what has it been like opening for bands like Red Flag, Cause & Effect ,The Human League and
Anything Box? What are some key things that you learned from them? What are some of your
favorite bands that you enjoy playing/touring with?
A:---With opening for the bigger acts we have learned a lot about the business side of the
industry and touring. We don't get a lot of time to hang out with them, so we try to increase our
knowledge as much as we can and learn from those who have walked the path we are on now.
I'd say our Favorite band to perform with has to be Solemn Assembly from Dallas, Texas. It's
because we have done more shows with them than anyone else, and those guys are our
brothers. They're Great Friends, and Great musicians.
My favorite acts to tour with so far are Imperative Reaction and System Syn, who we did some
Texas Support dates with earlier this year. Those guys are the coolest bunch we've ever met in
the industry, and they really support what we do as we support them back.
Q:What are your Favorite synthesizers/machinery?
A:-----Korg Monopoly, Yamaha SY-85, Moog Source, Access Virus KC
Q: What is the song writing process for you. Do you write songs to fit the melodies or vise-versa?
Do you lock yourself away somewhere?...What is the formula for these articulate and amazing
songs that has become the trade-mark of Provision?
A:---It can work either way. Being a Drummer originally and having played bass in a previous
band, I usually start with those elements first. Although sometimes I write a song around the
lyrics.
Recently I wrote the lead parts for a new song on my cell phone because I was inspired and
needed a sound source. I can play Gary Numan's "Cars" on my cell phone!!!!
It's whatever I feel at the time that makes it all happen.
The lyrical content is about half Fiction, and half True. I write about my life or what I see in
other peoples lives for the most part. Or how I see a situation unfold through my eyes.
Q: finally, What is Breye listening too these days? (music)>
A:---I am listening to the Thompson Twins, Gary Numan, Halovox, ABC, unreleased Provision,
Xymox, Information Society, and A Flock of Seagulls for the most part lately. And also some
Ladytron and Camouflage. That's about it.
Matt: Id like to end this interview by simply saying "Thank You" and I want to encourage every
one to get out and check out these guys at a live show. They are about to embark on a huge U.S.
tour!
Breye: Thank You for the Interview Matt!!!!!! We look forward to seeing you again in the
near future and appreciate your support!
